Nuclear Crater Sedan

Nuclear Crater Sedan

The nuclear crater Sedan is located in the Nevada Testing Site, approximately 90 miles north of Las Vegas. This is the result of a nuclear test, an underground nuclear explosion produced on July 6, 1962 during the Plowshare Program.40

This program was launched in June 1957 to investigate the possible benefits of controlled nuclear explosions. The idea was that a nuclear explosion could easily dig up a large area, facilitating the creation of canals and roads, improving mining techniques, or simply moving a large mass of rocks and soil. The intensity and distribution of radiation, however, turned out to be too large, and the program was abandoned. Operation Plowshare included 27 thermonuclear explosions. Only four of them were aimed at creating craters, among which the Sedan was by far the largest.

Let's look at it in more detail ...

The beginning of the tests in the desert in New Mexico, then for 8000 km from the USA in Hiroshima and Nagasaki - The world started from the explosion of atomic bombs. In the 60s of the 20th century, Americans continued to conduct nuclear tests in the Nevada desert. The Soviet Union has already developed its own nuclear weapons, it was necessary to overtake them in this area. Nuclear testing sites, in fact, have become the battlegrounds of the Cold War.

On the test site in Nevada, about 100 atmospheric nuclear explosions were conducted. Today this place is open to tourists. Bus tours, organized by the US Department of Energy, take visitors to the site as the main nuclear test site from 1960 to 1962. One of the local attractions is Crater Sedan. It emerged on July 6, 1962, after the detonation of a nuclear device displacing 12,000,000 tons of earth and stones.

In this case, the bomb was placed at a depth of 194 meters and had a capacity equivalent to 104 kilotons of TNT, or about eight Hiroshima bombs. The explosion first raised the dome of the earth 90 meters above the desert, before scattering 12 million tons of earth in all directions. The result is a crater 100 meters deep and 390 meters wide.

The explosion caused precipitation, which affected more US residents than any other nuclear test. More than 13 million people were exposed to radiation.although within 7 months after the explosion, the radiation decayed to such an extent that the base of the crater became safe for walking without protective clothing. Today, more than 10,000 visitors visit the crater every year, ordering monthly tours from the US Department of Energy. An observation platform was built on the crater dump, allowing tourists to perfectly see all the details.

The negative impacts from Operation Plowshare and 27 nuclear projects ultimately led to the completion of the program in 1977, mainly due to public opposition.

The Soviet Union continued similar research in its program “Nuclear Explosions for the National Economy” and conducted 150 nuclear tests. The most famous was the “Chagan” project, identical to Sedan - which created a crater for the Chagan artificial reservoir.
