How we are cheated in restaurants: small tricks of waiters
As soon as we cross the threshold of the house, we immediately risk being deceived: whether it is a pickpocket in a vehicle, some fortune teller on the street, or a dishonest seller in a store. In addition, it is not always cruel deception, but catering workers also have their secrets and little tricks: they always remember that they need to collect more revenue, therefore they constantly resort to various tricks that make you give more money in cafes and restaurants than you planned. So, how do the waiters cheat us?
"Booked" or not?
Very often in restaurants you can see the plates "Booked", which stand not only on small tables for couples, with a favorable angle on the hall or by the window, but also on large, roomy tables with sofas. You come with a girlfriend or soulmate in a cafe, you see such a cool comfortable table and sigh with annoyance, not even knowing how you are being deceived. After all, such places are most often not booked at all: the waiters purposely keep them free in case a large company comes to the restaurant, ready to have a good rest and spend money.
Why they put me at the entrance?
If you come to a restaurant where there are many empty tables, you will most likely be offered to choose a place at your discretion. But sometimes the waiter meets and sits you down at the table on his own, and for that he has his little tricks. As a rule, this table will be a table at the entrance or at the window. They are deceiving us in this way for a very simple reason: sitting at the entrance or right at the window, you will create the impression that the restaurant is full for incoming people, and especially for those who just choose an institution, looking at the windows. By the way, if you look good and expensive, you can also be offered a place "in sight", or even on the veranda.
How do we get to order
As you have already noticed, in almost all cafes and restaurants, waiters will ask if you want to order a snack, wait for the main course, whether you will have a drink, whether you want something for dessert ... The more and more expensive you order, the better . There is even a special receptionwhich is designed to confuse you and cause you a certain sense of shame - these are so-called closed questions that do not give you the opportunity to answer "yes" or "no", but give you the right to choose between two positions.
For example, you might be asked if you would like to drink white or red wine, or in extreme cases, tea or coffee. Even when we came to the institution with the only desire - to eat and save on drinks, such a statement of the question makes us waver. Most often, people succumb, not wanting to look untenable.
There are other secrets of the waiters, designed to correctly lead the visitor to the order and tear off more money from him. Usually they relate to the choice of alcoholic beverages, and are designed for scattered people who do not understand the question. The waiter can offer you a choice of different wines, pronouncing them with a patter. If you do not care about the difference between cabernet wines, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir, then you will most likely catch by ear only the last name the waiter said. And it is, as practice shows, that turns out to be the most expensive of the list!
Do not touch my plate!
Another method by which we are deceived in restaurants and cafes is a hasty cleaning of plates from the table. Of course, we heard that according to etiquette it is considered good form to leave some food on a plate, but when the dish is paid for, why not eat it to the last crumb! However, some waiters go on small tricks and quickly carry off plates with a half-eaten dish, even if it would be enough for another two good "bites." Especially often this happens when the visitor leaves the place, going to the toilet.
Why do they do it, you ask? Firstly, if you have not eaten well, then such tricks may push the order of the second dish. Secondly, even if you are not so hungry, an empty table, where food was five minutes ago, causes a feeling of discomfort - especially if your plate was taken away, and the neighbor on the table still chews his portion safely. This is interesting: What rules of behavior at the table you still do not know?
What fell is not lost
Perhaps, for many, this will not be a revelation, but many workers do not feel conscience pricks, dropping your cutlery / food on the floor and putting it back. After all, the repetition of the order is an additional loss for the restaurant, but the devices ... they are just too lazy to wash them. And this is not to mention the fact that not all the waiters carefully monitor the hygiene of hands, touching your plates.
Such secrets of the waiters suggest that with the staff of cafes and restaurants should be more friendly. We do not even know how they are deceiving us, because the dish that has not reached the table is in their full power, and instead of random missteps, they can go for some deliberate filth.
Drink to your health!
And here's another reception, as we cheat with the order of alcoholic beverages. Sometimes the waiter doesn’t move away from you one step at a time and constantly monitors whether your glass is empty, promptly adding wine or champagne to you. He does not even try to give you a drink, he just wants your drink to end in the middle of the meal - then there is a chance that you will order more.
By the way, the pretty drunk customers are deceived with alcohol for a sweet soul: they attribute extra orders to the bill, instead of expensive alcohol they pour cheap, or they generally mix up leftovers from the bar.
Lunch to the music
And you wondered how they cheat us, including loud music in a restaurant? It would seem that why she is needed there, if we are not on the dance floor. There are some little tricks here: under loud rhythmic music a person starts to eat faster, as if adjusting to it. If you ask to turn down the sound, in most cases your request will not even be considered fulfilling, although they will assure the opposite. By the way, at first it will seem to you that the music has really become quieter.
Another method of cheating us in restaurants is the discrepancy between the actual cost of food and the prices on the menu. When we choose a dish from the menu at an attractive price, we may not notice that the price is per 100 grams of product, and the portion in the plate, of course, weighs at least 2-3 times more. Visitors complain about such an approach more and more often, so such tricks are less and less common, but be careful, and carefully study all the inscriptions in small print in the menu - there is still a chance to get caught.
Of course, one cannot say that all these little tricks are found everywhere - there are a lot of decent establishments with respectable waiters, cooks and bartenders who will serve you according to all the rules, without resorting to the above tricks and disgusting things. But to be on guard never hurts, right?
