The scientists presented their conclusions in a preprint published in the repository at bioRxiv.org.

In 2014, the work was published, according to which 40 percent of the Chinese are descendants of the three "super-parents" who lived during the Neolithic period, when the development of agriculture began. This conclusion is based on the presence in the population of three frequently occurring haplotypes (gene variants inherited together) in the Y chromosome: O3a1c, O3a2c1 and O3a2c1a. The researchers decided to find out if these haplotypes could originally belong to the first Chinese emperors.

After studying the myths and historical records, the researchers found that, according to the legends, most Chinese surnames originate from the names of the rulers Yang-di and Huang-di.Genetics took DNA samples from 2415 men who were divided into several groups according to their last names: Jiang (originating from the emperor Yang-di), Ying and Ji (both from Huang-di). The last group included several surnames, which are believed to be related to the name of the mythological rebel hero Chi Yu, heir to Yang-di.

It has been established that among the carriers of the O3a1c haplotype, surnames associated with Yang-di were more common, and among the carriers of O3a2c1a - surnames associated with Huang-di. Haplotype O3a2c1 was typical for people from the fourth group. Thus, scientists, according to them, managed to associate the three "super-parents" with the ancient rulers of China. However, the genetic difference between the various groups remains insignificant, so it is impossible to come to unambiguous conclusions.

Huang Di is one of the first emperors of China, who is considered the ancestor of all Chinese and the founder of Taoism. Yang-di, or "emperor of fire" is the highest deity in the Chinese cult of the Sun, as well as the patron saint of agriculture and medicine. Historians believe that both rulers existed as real historical figures, but later became heroes of myths.
