Features of growing and caring for tree peony

let's get acquainted

Tree peony redMany gardeners recommend planting tree peonies in spring. This is a big mistake. In fact, planting should be carried out exclusively in the spring, namely from the last day of August to the middle of September. You ask why it is impossible to plant this bush in the spring? The answer is banal: frequent, sometimes strong frosts are extremely undesirable for a bush and can destroy not only its buds, but the whole plant as well.

It is worth remembering that a transplant transfers a plant extremely painfully.

At one place a tree peony can grow more than a dozen years. Based on the above, the place for its landing must be selected initially correctly. This will allow the bush to please the gardener with lush and full bloom.
The plot on which the planting is planned should be well protected from strong winds, and the soil in this place is desirable alkaline, loose and fertile.

Since the bush prefers abundant moisture, but does not tolerate stagnant water, before planting, the plant must be provided with good drainage.

Peony saplingsSaplings should be purchased exclusively from trusted vendors or in flower nurseries. Before purchasing, it is necessary to pay attention to the following points:

  • winter hardiness;
  • height, shade of flowers, their diameter and terry;
  • survival rate in the climate where it is planned to land.

An ideal seedling will be a plant with two or three stiff shoots from 20 to 25 cm high, but no more (see photo). On each of the shoots there should be unblown buds, and the root system itself should look prosperous and healthy.

We start landing

Landing patternHow is planting a bush? To do this, you need to dig a hole the size of 70 by 70 cm. And lay out its bottom with appropriate drainage, which can be created from a layer:

  • gravel;
  • rubble;
  • sand;
  • broken bricks.

In short, the drainage can be created from the material that is at hand, following the scheme shown in the attached photo.

The next step will be filling? pits of earth mixed with fertilizer. The mixture is prepared according to the following principle:

  • 1 cup potassium sulphate;
  • 1 cup of superphosphate;
  • 1 cup dolomite flour.

The finished mixture is poured into the groove made and compacted. The second half of the soil is mixed with two buckets of compost and also poured into a pit prepared for planting.

Peony seedlingThe seedling is planted in such a way that its root neck is located at ground level. Then the tree peony is watered with 4-5 liters of water, and the hole is completely covered with soil. Planting is completed by mulching the plant with humus.

It is impossible to mulch this bush with needles or sawdust, because in such cases the threat of excessive oxidation of the soil and the appearance of various diseases increases significantly.

After three years from the moment of planting, the bush will delight the gardener with abundant large and bright inflorescences.

Subtleties of care

It takes care of peony in watering, weeding, feeding and pruning inflorescences.

Watering

Peony bushFor all summer, tree peony is watered only 2-3 times. One watering will consist of 6-7 liters of water. Naturally, in dry weather, care will change, and water will have to be more often. But in August it is necessary to completely stop moistening. To make it easier for you to take care of the plant, you can simultaneously remove weeds and loosen the soil along with watering.

Experienced gardeners recommend that after each wetting and subsequent loosening of the soil, cover it slightly with humus around the stem of the bush.

Top dressing

Watering a bushNo less important is the care of the plant and in terms of feeding. In the first years after planting, the tree-like peony needs exclusively foliar application, as shown in the photo provided. After each watering the bush can be sprayed with urea, based on the composition of 40 grams. on 10 liters, or a complex of minerals.

Starting from the third year of life, peony care will change somewhat, since during the season the plant will need to be fed at least three times:

  1. In early spring, during the growth of shoots. During this period 100 grams are used. nitrofoski.
  2. When the kidneys swell. The same fertilizer is applied in the same amount.
  3. After flowering. Then 30 g superphosphate is used. on the bush.

Getting ready for winter

Peony houseAs soon as your tree peony has completed its flowering period, it will be necessary to cut off all faded inflorescences. This step is necessary in order for the plant to retain its external decorative appearance and have the opportunity for the next year to please the owner with lush flowering.

With the arrival of cold weather, the bush does not require any special care. Just for the winter you will need to cover it with dry foliage or a house (see photo).

That wintered

PruningThe next year, in the spring, after all the shelters have been removed, each stalk of the bush is cut to 1/3, and all broken branches are removed (see photo). Such a step perfectly stimulates not only the right growth, but also beautiful flowering, providing an opportunity to admire the peony in all its glory.

Diseases and pests

Sick leavesPests are fairly resistant to pests. As a rule, the most common disease is gray pion rot. It is determined by the brown patina that is present both on the leaves and sprouts. The treatment will consist of spraying the plant with 0.6% or 0.7% copper sulfate solution. Also, the bush can be affected by caterpillars and fungi.

Particular attention should be paid to the fact that mushrooms, often growing at the base of a peony, are parasites and can destroy the plant.

Do not be afraid of ants covering the buds of the plant. Despite the common belief that they are pests, in fact, these insects do not cause him even the slightest harm, because they simply collect on it nectar droplets that stand out from its buds.
