Celebrity without arms and legs: Nikolay Kobelkov

The life of Nikolai Kobelkov is a continuous feat. At a time when many healthy people with healthy limbs sinking and drinking, he did everything to live as fully as possible, not only that - he became famous throughout the world and made a fortune for posterity.
The “typical” biography of Nikolay is replicated in the network, in which there are several significant inconsistencies, therefore the official Austrian website “Prater Dynastien” praterdynastien.at is taken as the source, which, by the way, contains data on the entire Kobelkov family.
Nikolai was born in the town of Voznesensk, Orenburg Region, on July 22, 1851, as the 17th child in the family of Vasily and Natalya Kobelkovykh. The birth of a child without limbs plunged parents into shock, having recovered from which they invited eminent doctors to consult. Vasily Kobelkov at that time was the mayor of Voznesensk, a wealthy man, so that the best professorship was invited. Of course, no matter how clever the doctors were, they could not grow limbs; the maximum result given at the conclusion of the survey is the cause of such an anomaly.Scientists agreed that the so-called “spontaneous amputation” occurs when limbs may die due to “squeezing by amniotic banners (fibrous filaments arising in the fetal bladder, passing through its cavity, they can entangle, tie or cut through the body parts of the fetus or umbilical cord , causing various malformations) in the prenatal period. "
These constrictions can “cut off” a finger, part of an arm or leg, but in the case of Nikolai Kobelkov there was a maximum amputation - all legs and arms were destroyed, only a small stump remained in place of the right hand, which allowed us to perform minimal actions that glorified him in the world .
Nikolai grew up perfectly normal and was especially loved by his parents. To their surprise, at the age of two he began to walk around the stumps. Growing up, Kobelkov learned to use the stump – hand with such dexterity that he plunged the audience into considerable surprise. The teachers could not hide the admiration for the courage of the child and undertook to teach him to write. Nikolai pressed the stump handle to his cheek and deduced very beautiful letters.

Despite his physical imperfections, the young man, with the help of elementary devices and thanks to acquired dexterity, took part in hunting, fishing and riding. At the age of 18 he already works in the gold mines of the Orenburg province, where he is mainly engaged in payroll and accounting books. But in the service he was short-lived - in 1870 a turning point happened in the fate of Nicholas - the famous theater producer Berg, seeing a young man at the fair, invited him to perform in his theater.
With 20 years Kobelkov began theatrical activities - he has consistently performed in many cities of Russia, and then toured in Europe. Its numbers were quite simple, but they demanded considerable dexterity and skills from Kobelkov himself, and later, in 1900, he starred in a short film, where he demonstrated all his scenic “skills” (see the video below). The film did not include only the "death number" - Nikolai’s exit from the cage with a lion.

A tour of Europe led Kobelkova to Vienna, where he met his love - 18-year-old Anna Charlotte Wilfert.Anna answered Nicholas in return, and in 1876 the lovers were married at the Evangelical Church in Vienna. After Anna became pregnant, Nikolai was afraid that the child would be born with the same defects as his. But everything worked out - Alexander was born an absolutely normal child, all the Kobelkovs gave birth to six children - five sons (Alexander, Otto, Nikolay, Paul, Ernst) and one daughter Helen. The tender age of the children was held in Vienna, and when they reached the age of majority they accompanied their father on trips.

In 1906, the Kobelkovs acquired the first section 117 in the famous Vienna park - the Prater; several attractions, including a bicycle and for sledding, were located there. Later they bought a couple more plots, thus turning from artists into wealthy bourgeois. These acquisitions allowed the family and descendants of the Kobelkovs to live comfortably until the 1970s, when the Prather reconstructed and built more modern buildings on the site site. But the owners, of course, received a substantial monetary compensation.

In 1912, the wife of Nicholas Anna died from an epileptic shock. For Nicholas, it was an extremely hard loss: "She was the best, noble creature that ever lived in this world, she came into my life as an angel to give me the highest happiness." After the death of Anna Kobelkov, he stopped his concert activities and retired to Vienna, where he lived with his family and children until the day of his death on January 19, 1933.
On the Web, you can find allegations that in the second half of Kobelkov’s biography, he went all out and out - drank vodka, beat his wife, took pictures of himself naked and the like. These allegations are fiction and have no basis. The one and only photo where Nikolai is really naked is made for a medical journal; alleged drunkenness goes against his family; it's hard to imagine how he could “beat his wife”, because a light kick is enough for this man to fly a few steps.
