Baikal Electronics launched a large-scale production of its Baikal-T1 processors. March 28, 2017, the production of a batch of silicon wafers, on which a processor integrated chip was applied using lithography and etching using 28 nm technology, was completed at the facilities of the Taiwanese company TSMC (from the English Semiconductor Manufacturing Company).

The following stages of the production cycle include cutting the plates into crystals, placing the crystals on the substrate, packaging the processor, as well as several stages of testing. After the implementation of these stages, the next industrial batch of microprocessors in the amount of up to 100 thousand pieces will be available to commercial customers.

According to a representative of Baikal, Andrei Malafeev, in a conversation with CNews, this circulation was calculated based on the real needs of specific customers of the company from Russia and other countries.Malafeev estimated the number of these customers at about 150 organizations, although he refrained from specifying their names and assessing how many of them are in foreign countries, and which particular countries are being discussed.

Further editions of the processor will become clear a little later - they will also determine the needs of customers. In this case, the developer does not abandon the previously announced plans, according to which by 2020 the company plans to release and implement several million of its processors.

How much has already been released "Baikal", and how much it cost

Baikal-T1 is a processor with MIPS architecture (Microprocessor without Interlocked Pipeline Stages), created in accordance with the concept of RISC, that is, for processors with a reduced instruction set.

The chronology of the creation of this processor Andrei Malafeev describes as follows. The development of the processor was completed at the end of 2014, and in December, “Baikal Electronics” transferred to the TSMC factory the so-called RTL-code of the product for its release. In May 2015, the company announced the release of engineering samples.

Then it was reported that the development was implemented with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Trade with the involvement of funds of the agency itself and the federal target program "Development of the electronic component base and radio electronics for 2008-2015."and also investments of the companies "T-nano" and "T-platforms" (parent structure "Baikal Electronics"). The specific amount of investment in the project in "Baikal" then did not disclose.

Then the samples were manually tested, and in “Baikal” they were convinced of their efficiency. After that, at the end of the summer of 2015, the company submitted an application to the Expert Council of the Industry Development Fund (FER) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade for a thematic loan to continue the project - launching mass production.

In October 2015, the soft loan was approved. With the company's own investment level of 288 million, the volume of this loan was 500 million. With this money, Baikal placed an order for TSMC in December 2015. In September 2016, the so-called installation batch of about 10 thousand processors saw the light.

Now we are talking about the 100 thousandth industrial party, which will see the light, approximately, in three months.

Scope of "Baikal"

The main consumers of Baikal-T1 are manufacturers of telecommunications equipment (routers, IP phones, data storage, etc.), computing equipment, equipment for embedded systems (industrial automation, terminals, automotive systems, etc.).The consumption of processors in these markets, according to the estimate of the FER, is growing within 7-15% per year.

“In addition to commercial tasks, the Baikal Electronics project, with the support of the FER, solves the problem of technological and information security in Russia,” they note in the FER. “It provides for the development, production and supply of critical electronic components, as well as the creation of safe devices based on them.”
