American education and upbringing of a child through the eyes of a Russian teacher

American education and upbringing of a child through the eyes of a Russian teacher. This is another country, other traditions, other concepts ...

Here is the opinion of one person.

... A child was born in the family. Dad was present at birth, helped, participated. "We gave birth." The child immediately arrives at his own room, prepared in advance for him, in order not to interfere with his presence to his parents to lead their usual (if possible) way of life. It is better not to give the pacifier. It is necessary instead to teach to suck fingers, if you still can not. Why fingers? What do you mean why? To be independent of adults, suddenly the nipple will fall out, and there is no one to file.

Independence is paramount. It begins from birth. It will be holy to cultivate all life and carefully preserved until death. And now let the child learn to calm himself down. In my school, 6 - 7-year-old children suck their fingers. As noticed or upset, then immediately thumb in the mouth.

In the crib to the child put a teddy bear or even some kind of soft toy. The child will sleep with her sometimes until ... coming of age. A friend of my eldest son did not forget to capture his very weary bear when he came to us overnight, up to 13 years at least. Often this role is performed by a baby blanket or diaper: in my school, a seven-year-old girl does not part with her baby diaper. Adults say that it calms the child, instills in him confidence, so he is not very lonely in this world.

... There is a lot of talk about the syndrome of sudden infant death, it is also called a lullaby. A child dies from choking. It happens for no apparent reason at the age of one year, during sleep and, most importantly, in the crib. It never happens on the hands. If you are near and take a child in the arms, the breathing is restored and nothing happens.

Different solutions are proposed for this problem, a lot is discussed about the posture in which it is better to lay the baby on the tummy, on the back or on the flank. In this case, the child is left for the night in another room.Take it to the parents can not, because they need to have sex, and with a child, even a newborn, it is absolutely unacceptable by local concepts.

American puritanism in its present form in combination with an early initiation (years between 12 and 13) in sex, practiced as a sport, is something very special and interesting in itself. Let's go back to the upbringing of children.

The child grows, it is flooded with toys in quantities unprecedented by Russian concepts. How many gifts does Santa Claus bring to the New Year? Here at Christmas, Santa will bring little American 5 or 6 pieces, the same amount will be from mom and dad, there are still relatives and grandmothers and grandfathers. If you judge love by the amount of what is acquired for money, then American parents are probably the most loving in the world.

It is interesting to watch the children tearing the beautiful wrappers from the gifts under the Christmas tree and throwing them aside with displeasure. So many expectations and so many disappointments! It is very difficult to please. Therefore, a list of everything that the left leg wants at the moment is made in advance.

The same list was made by the parents of the baby when they got married. They went to the shops and brought everything they wanted to get as a gift for the wedding to the computer, then they gave the guests a list of shops, and they could choose there a gift chosen by the newlyweds in advance. If stubborn guests show self-will, then their uninvited gifts often simply surrender back to the store. After Christmas, such returns are also very common.

Usually in each “school district” there are several elementary schools, one “middle” and one “high” school. Most often they are all scattered throughout the area. Training begins with a full five years. The zero class is called “kindergarten,” followed by four more or, in some areas, five. The next stage - 6 - 8th classes. This school is called “middle”; it will be located in another building. From the 9th to the 12th class - “high school”, the building is again another.

In the school that my eldest son graduated, from the 9th to the 12th grade, one and a half thousand people studied. There were 300 people in his class. It’s not that they all attended a lesson together, they simply don’t have a class as such: since high school, they go to each lesson in a different composition.Actually, they begin to shuffle with kindergarten.

Every year, everyone is re-mixed and given a new teacher. Teachers, as a rule, teach only at one level, for example, only in the first or second grade, and so on. There are exceptions, but rarely. When I asked the headmaster of the school where my eldest son was studying at that time, why they were shuffled, I was told that this was done so that the children knew as many children as possible and did not attach to anyone specifically. “Nothing that they turned out to be with a friend in different classes this year. Your son will have many new friends! This is even better!"

Attachment here is rather a negative concept, close to dependence. And to be independent, to be always in itself and FOR YOURSELF is the most important thing. But aggressiveness - positive, means strength, assertiveness, ability to achieve YOURSELF - these are qualities of a leader. Why change teachers? And this is so that if you get a bad teacher, it won't be the next year. And in one class only, they teach, because it is easier to do. Narrow specialization. Imagine a teacher of mathematics, who understands basically only algebra for the 6th grade.

With a system where children go to each lesson in a different composition, and the changes are only 3 minutes, more often than not, deep friendships are not formed, although there are again exceptions.

Friendship in the States is a completely different concept than ours. “Here, mom, is my friend,” says the child after he met someone at the playground and played with him for half an hour. He may never again meet his "friend" and not even remember him. Virtually everyone you know is designated by the word "friend." There are “friends” to do something together.

For example, play basketball or computer, go to the store. If the weather is bad, there is nowhere to go, there are no new computer games, then there is no need to meet. When I asked my eldest son, who had half of the seventh-graders district in his “friends”, why is he sitting at home today, on Saturday, and if he couldn’t call him Jordan or Steve and call them to us, I could hear something like it’s not raining and playing basketball in the street ”or“ we’ve already beat all the games that we have and now we don’t have to do anything ”. In short, they just do not meet for communication, they meet for a specific, definite occupation. The situation will change a little when sex becomes one of such occupations.

The point is still not as simple as playing on gaming consoles, you don't want to want here, but you have to communicate, so almost “just like that.” They don’t expect much from a friend, they don’t have any complaints, they don’t keep much loyalty. Friends often change without much tragedy.

Another interesting detail that never ceases to amaze me at the school where I work. Children sit in the class themselves, in groups, with those with whom they are friends. Chatter and games begin, cheating, which is understandable, you make a remark to someone, and then everyone immediately begins to blame the "friend", and so hotly they accuse him of all possible sins, it seems that there is no longer any friendship between them and being can not, but no, everything remains unchanged. “Friend” will do the same in similar circumstances. Everyone, of course, it is clear that their skin is closer to the body. There is nothing to be offended here.

Individualism is preached and fostered fiercely, although the result is often the opposite. I liked the photos taken by high school students of my school during my trip to Peter. Nine out of every ten photos were ...the children themselves, not the children in the background of, say, Nevsky or Palace Square, no. Children at the airport, children in the room, children somewhere else, it is difficult to say where. The main object of the currently recorded history is not a new, foreign country, they themselves are not in this country, ONLY THEY. At the stand at the school where my son studied, there is a wall newspaper with photos of a trip to France. And what? In addition to the Eiffel Tower, some American boys and girls either in the dining room, then at the airport, or in the room in the hotel where they lived ... And with all this, as far as individuality is concerned, it is the Americans that often lack it. .

Comparing Russian, Lebanese and American children, I can say that the first and second children have much more individuality both in dress, interest, manner of keeping themselves, and in thinking. In 1991 - 1992 I taught a course on Russian culture at the university. When discussing in a lesson any topic in a class, there were at most two opinions. They differed from each other in the same way as the positions of Democrats and Republicans. The young population remained strictly within the party framework. I was struck by the passivity of the audience. It was very difficult to stir them up, to cause interest in something that was not directly related to their life. Most of all, it looked like the Soviet Union I recently abandoned. The only difference was that there they were simply afraid to express their opinion there, but they still had it, but here the ideology does not come down from above, the masses themselves are imbued with it.

In the full sense of the "people and parties are one." I was even threatened once in class. To my remark that it was nice to know a little about those countries where America constantly pokes its nose, the students asked me if I, a foreigner, were afraid to make such comments, because it sounds like something “against their country”. I expressed surprise and wondered what had happened to the “freedom of speech”.

Do you know how we treat siblings? In the States, however, they have been diligently taught to snitch from childhood. In the event of any conflict, you should immediately resort to the help of adults. If you answered the one who struck or insulted you, then it doesn’t matter who is right or wrong, and both will be punished and equally, no one will understand this, everyone will answer for their personal actions, whatever they are called. And this is not only in children. Breeding is the duty of every citizen. I saw that somewhere someone had departed from the rules, - report, fulfill your civic duty. It doesn’t matter who did it, a friend or parents, that the measures should be taken on time.

At the age of seven, the eldest son, having come from school somehow, noticed that, they say, “you will be forced to do yelling at me, I will call the police, I’m told the police today that if they offend us at home, you need to dial 911, the police will come and figure it out. ” Ten years later, when the younger son was seven years old, he, watching our attempts to get the older brother to study, just picked up and dialed these same 911, then, however, was frightened, hung up, but we were immediately called back from there. When asked why he did this, the child said that it was because we were shouting at our brother, and at school they were told what to do in this case. The police came to us and were convinced of the situation.

The son of my local Russian girlfriend also threatened his parents with involving the police in resolving the conflict of generations, and also at about 7 years old. And about what is happening in school, and say no. The only exception is such a thing as drugs. There will be silence. This is a serious matter, for it can kill.
