After 69 years, a veteran from the United States realized his dream, paying tribute to the memory of Soviet soldiers who liberated him from captivity.

This week, 69 years later, a veteran of the US Army Leroy Williamson finally arrived in Moscow to pay tribute to the memory of Soviet soldiers who liberated him from Nazi captivity at the end of World War II.
Fulfilling the dream of his life, 93-year-old Williamson laid a wreath this Wednesday at the Allied Monument in Victory Park in Moscow. In her emotional speech, she said that it was “a great honor” to thank the 44th Guards Baranavichy Red Banner Rifle Division for the release of 9,200 prisoners of war in 1945.
“One of the greatest hopes in my life was the opportunity to honor those Soviet soldiers who rescued more than 9,000 prisoners of war on May 1, 1945 from the Stalag Lyuft I camp,” said Williamson, who is originally from Texas.
